Low back pain

There are a number of different causes that may result in low back pain and assessment is needed to try to find the cause. Specific techniques and exercises may be of benefit in helping the problem. Independence from the therapist is the ultimate aim, helping people to understand and self manage their condition.

Sciatica or nerve pain down the leg may be associated with low back pain.

Case History: Sciatica

A 33 year old man attended having experienced a pain down the back of the thigh, present for 2 weeks. The cause was found to be of muscular origin. He was treated with mobilisation and stretching exercises and the problem resolved. One session only needed.

Case History: Low back pain/knee pain.

A 29 year old woman who worked as a hairdresser was experiencing low back and knee pain since the birth of her son some 7 years previously. She was found to have a problem with the pelvis which was causing one leg to be longer than the other, leading to the low back and knee pain.

She received treatment aiming to return the pelvis to its normal position, including massage, joint mobilisation and a home exercise program to maintain the new corrected alignment. She had a total of 5 sessions and has been pain free since in both the knee and the low back. She has not required any further treatment.
