Hip problems

Pain in the hip joint area is often confused with sacroiliac problems in the pelvis, or soft tissue problems on the outer aspect of the hip.

Various muscles and ligaments in these areas can give rise to pain. The hip joint itself gives manifests pain in the groin at the front, and is sometimes referred down the thigh to the knee. However this pain area could also be referred from the lower back. It is therefore necessary to examine a variety of structures as well as the actual hip joint itself to diagnose the cause. If it is a muscular problem, it can usually be resolved easily with physiotherapy techniques that may include massage, stretching and exercises. A low back problem can also be treated by physiotherapy.

If the hip joint itself is involved, onward referral may be necessary for further tests such as an X-Ray. If I suspect arthritis, physiotherapy in the form of massage and exercises can be given to help make the joint feel more comfortable, while awaiting a hip replacement at some future date.
